The school was first established in mid-1980 using land in Stage II, Anuradhapura. It began through the support of the Pubudu Grama Sanwardana Samithiya community club.

On June 27, 1985, the school was named Pubudupura Viduhala. The first principal was Mr. P. Ariyabandu, and the school began with 33 students and 3 teachers.

After August 1988, the student population increased to 342 and the academic staff grew to 18 teachers. A major moment in the school history came on March 22, 1990, when it was renamed Anuradhapura D.S. Senanayaka Vidyalaya.

On January 10, 2003, the school became A/D.S. Senanayaka Model Primary School, marking another important milestone in its development.
